City College of New York Graduate Jazz Ensembles Performance
Join us for our community performance from the City College of New York Graduate Jazz Ensembles, under the direction of Steve Wilson, Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at CCNY. All ensemble members are students in the MM Jazz Studies program at CCNY. They are experienced performers and a part of the next wave of dynamic musicians at the core of the New York and international jazz scene. They will present their original compositions as well as their arrangements of familiar standards.

John H. Smith -guitarist/producer is a New Yorker with deep roots in the Harlem Jazz and Roots Music scenes. Raised with Gospel, Classical, Blues and Jazz influences. Noël Simoné Wippler is a Soprano, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, actor, writer and producer born and raised and residing in El Barrio of Harlem, New York City . Noël has shared the stage with the likes of Blues ,Hip Hop , Rock, Latin and Jazz greats from such as Herbie Hancock, Houston Pearson , Geri Allen , Marc Carey, Roy Hargrove , Bobby Sanabria and many more. Noël works in a theater production of “Aint Misbehavin” with Irving Street Rep , where she plays the character known from actress Charlayne Woodard. Currently , Noel recently played Sister Rosetta Tharpe in “Marie and Rosetta” in the 2019 season of Cygnet Theatre in San Diego, CA.

Tenor saxophonist Tommy Morimoto is originally from Matthews,NC, but moved to New York in 2003 in search of more playing opportunities. He has appeared in concert with Dave Brubeck, Les Paul, Anita O’Day, Clint Eastwood, Bob Cranshaw, Joe Wilder, Bill Cosby and Eddie Bert. Mr. Morimoto has played in concert halls, festivals (Playboy, Monterey, JVC), and nightclubs (Minton’s Playhouse,Yoshis, Birdland, Iridium, Catalina’s, The Rainbow Room) and throughout the United States, France, Italy and Switzerland. Recent performances included Ronnie Scotts in London and New York’s famous Blue Note. He has been featured as a sideman on several recordings, including one with Anita O’ Day. Mr. Morimoto studies with legendary pianist Hank Jones.

Nate Lucas was born and raised in New York City. He began studying music at the age of 7 at the Manna house workshop. He first studied guitar under the guidance of the incomparable Skeeter Best. At age 8 he moved on to the piano and began to study with Madam Washington. Nathan was introduced to Jazz by his legendary Saxaphonist father Max “the Sax” Lucas. Music was just a hobby until he entered Lafamile Jazz Club in Harlem, which was his first encounter with the Hammond B3 organ. It was love at first sight and at that point he knew this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Over the years Nathan has befriended some of the greatest musicians in the world and has honed his craft under their tutelage. Such friends like Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Charles Earland, John Patton, George Benson, Gloria Coleman, Joey Defrancessco, Seleno Clarke, Danny Mixon, Mel Davis, Micheal LeDonne, Jimmy ” Preacher” Robbins have all taught him to master the art of Jazz and the Hammond B3 Organ.

For more than two decades she’s been on the scene, bassist/vocalist/producer/label owner and now filmmaker Mimi Jones has reigned supreme, as a side woman to an impressive coterie of musicians and as a leader with three original recording projects on her own Hot Tone Music label. Born Miriam Sullivan in New York City on March 25, 1972, and was raised in the Bronx. Jones studied Music at the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory, and has also studied with Linda McKnight, Lisle Atkinson, Barry Harris, Milt Hinton, Dr. Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef. Harlem legend Phil Young has been playing drums on and off since Bobby Blue Bland spotted him at an amateur night at the Apollo Theatre, when he was fifteen, and invited him to come play in black night clubs across the South. King Solomon Hicks
“King” Solomon Hicks (born February 8, 1995) is an American guitarist, blues, jazz singer, and composer. His style of music ranges from jazz, blues, classical, gospel, R&B, funk, Afro-Cuban, and classic rock. Hicks has been a blues guitarist since he was 13.
He plays a Benedetto GA35 guitar. Benedetto jazz guitars are hand crafted by Robert Benedetto an American luthier of archtop jazz guitars.

Peter Brainin is a 3x Grammy and Latin Grammy winning saxophonist, composer and educator who has toured internationally with Mongo Santamaría, Valery Ponomorev, Hilton Ruiz, Bebo Valdez, Chico O’Farrill, Bobby Sanabria, Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (with whom he’s featured on 2 Grammy winning CD’s), Joris Teepe, Willie Colon & Legal Alien, Samuel Torres, the Mambo Legends Orchestra and John DiMartino as well as with his own quartet and as a guest artist and clinician. In the U.S. he has performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Randy Weston, Harold Mabern, Idris Muhammad, Jerry Gonzalez, Paquito D’Rivera, Israel “Cachao” López, Sheila E., Eddie Palmieri and many other Jazz and Latin Jazz legends. Peter has appeared on over 200 albums including his own as co-leader with Steve Johns (which also feature contributions by Conrad Herwig, George Cables and Ben Monder) and with the quartet Native Soul. It was founded at the time that the American Federation of Musicians Local 310 did not admit minority musicians. Ruben Fox X Strivers Row Sessions
A rising star on the UK and US jazz scene, saxophonist Ruben Fox has already performed with legends including Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Roy Hargrove and Barry Harris, as well as other upcoming artists of his generation such as Reuben James and Mark Kavuma. From a musical family, Ruben is an alum of the renowned jazz education programme Tomorrow’s Warriors, as well as the Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance and the renowned performing arts conservatory Julliard in New York City. His sound has been compared to such heavyweights as Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and particularly Don Byas, possessing an exquisite tone and dynamic range. Ruben’s first album, simply-titled ‘Introducing Ruben Fox’ features a revolving cast of guests and also showcased his evident producing and arranging skills. Along with his considerable panache as a performer, Ruben is definitely one to watch.

Vivian Sessoms
You have to feel something about what you’re saying if you want anyone else to buy into it”, explains Vivian Sessoms with absolute certainty. “It’s important to me to mean what I say when I’m writing or singing a song. It can’t simply be just a collection of words. ” For Vivian, a life surrounded by music has ingrained the passion and the power of music in her. Born and raised in Harlem, Vivian, whose mother was a session/jingle-singer, and father who was a flautist/percussionist (for James Brown among others), learned the wonder and the craft of music at a young age. Several years of resume building followed, with Vivian performing, either live or in the studio, with an amazing array of artists including: P. Stanley Banks & Friends (Soul w/ one of the singers from Those Guys)
Bass guitar great Stanley Banks, a winner of multiple platinum and gold records, is a Brooklyn native and member of the Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame. Stanley began playing the bass while in high school, but his real musical education came from playing in the clubs along Fulton and Nostrand Avenues in Brooklyn. His professional career began with Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and blossomed with Esther Phillips. On July 4, 1975, Banks met George Benson and started an on-going 44-year relationship with this jazz legend.

Jazz pianist Bertha Hope-Booker was born on November 8, 1936, to Corinne Meaux and Clinton Rosemond. Raised in western Los Angeles, California, Hope-Booker attended Manual Arts High School. As a youth, she performed in numerous Los Angeles clubs. Hope-Booker studied piano at Los Angeles Community College and later received her B.A. degree in early childhood education from Antioch College.

Holly Bean
Holly grew up in East Tennessee and began playing the piano very early, always watching her parents play and wanting to copy what she heard. She was three years old or so when she picked out her first tune by ear on the piano. Loathe to take lessons, she mainly taught herself by learning music by ear and arranging it however she liked on the piano until college, when she met Donald Brown at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Brown recognized Holly’s inclination for the jazz idiom and immediately took her under his wing, which quickly resulted in Holly’s firm decision to pursue a professional career as a jazz pianist. During her time at UT Knoxville, Holly also studied classical piano under the direction of world-renowned pianist and Sandra G. Powell Endowed Professor of Piano Dr. Chih-Long Hu, as well as music composition under the direction of award-winning new music composer Dr. Andrew Sigler.

The Shed’s Jam Sessions is back!
TheShed (a New York City jam session established in 2013) is the brainchild of Grammy and Emmy award accredited music producer/engineer, Anu Sun. Since 2013, The Shed has been ranked one of New York City’s top jam sessions. Over the years The Shed has garnered a reputation as a hang for the hottest musicians in New York City’s Jazz and R&B scene, and as a launchpad for emerging talent. Some even venture to say that The Shed is like an underground “Showtime at The Apollo.” In speaking of The Shed, Anu stated that he started The Shed to find the best up-and-coming progressive talent, and to build his rolodex of skilled musicians. Noël Simoné Wippler is a Soprano, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, actor, writer and producer born and raised and residing in El Barrio of Harlem, New York City . James Carter – A powerhouse musician and one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, garnering plaudits for his role in helping to propel jazz full tilt into the future over the past twenty-five years. His music is fueled by deep respect and intimate knowledge of the jazz tradition. Carter always finds a way into what ever musical situation he finds himself in. “You have to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter says. “I think there’s tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences”. He has released 14 recordings with his various ensembles for Atlantic Records, Sony and UMG. Several feature his renowned Organ Trio and one includes the Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra by renowned composer, Roberto Sierra. 30 August 2019 marked his long-awaited debut on Blue Note Records with the release of James Carter Organ Trio: Live From Newport Jazz. James Carter is the winner of multiple downbeat awards; and in 2004 received one of America’s highest cultural awards: The Dr. Alaine Locke Award, given annually to individuals who have provided exemplary service and leadership in the promotion of African-American culture. 2024 sees the debut of James Carter’s latest project: Lookin’ at Lock: The Music of Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, featuring James Carter on Saxophones, Satish Robertson on trumpet, Gerard Gibbs on piano, Hilliard Greene on bass, and Kahlil Kwame Bell on drums.

Under the direction of Ahmaya Knoelle Higginson, Sing Harlem has grown to be a highly respected and influential force in the New York gospel scene, producing not only great vocalists, but top-notch global citizens. Sing Harlem has performed at many prestigious venues and concerts across America including The Congressional Black Caucus, The Stellar Awards, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, and the Grammy Awards.

Nate Lucas was born and raised in New York City. He began studying music at the age of 7 at the Manna house workshop. He first studied guitar under the guidance of the incomparable Skeeter Best. At age 8 he moved on to the piano and began to study with Madam Washington. Nathan was introduced to Jazz by his legendary Saxaphonist father Max “the Sax” Lucas. Music was just a hobby until he entered Lafamile Jazz Club in Harlem, which was his first encounter with the Hammond B3 organ. It was love at first sight and at that point he knew this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Over the years Nathan has befriended some of the greatest musicians in the world and has honed his craft under their tutelage. Such friends like Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Charles Earland, John Patton, George Benson, Gloria Coleman, Joey Defrancessco, Seleno Clarke, Danny Mixon, Mel Davis, Micheal LeDonne, Jimmy ” Preacher” Robbins have all taught him to master the art of Jazz and the Hammond B3 Organ.
Named in honor of the legendary Harlem speakeasy that attracted neighborhood folk, jazz greats, and noteworthy figures of the 20th century; from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. to Nat King Cole and James Baldwin. We’re privileged to share our namesake with the original Red Rooster.

Julia Danielle
Julia Danielle is an up-and-coming vocalist, arranger, educator, and composer based in the heart of the vibrant jazz scene of Chicago.
Her classical training with Northwestern University Voice and Opera professor, Theresa Brancaccio laid the solid foundation for Julia to now bend and blend the lines of classic and contemporary jazz and soul music. Julia grew up in the traveling and nationally competing Campanella Children’s Choir, and is an alumn of the Chicago a Cappella: High School Apprenticeship Program from 2018-2019.
Downstairs in this intimate speakeasy you’ll find innovative live jazz & incredible food. In addition to the music, Room 623’s classic art deco bar serves out hand-crafted artisanal cocktails alongside B²runch Harlem’s elevated seafood concept at the hand of Executive Chef, Jose Luis Miguel.

The Seleno Clarke Legacy Band leads a legendary Sunday evening Jazz Jam in the Harlem Community. The American Legion Post 398 is Harlem’s only remaining organ house and we are honored to partner with them in continuing a 25 year legacy in honor of the great organist, Saleno Clark. James Carter
James Carter – A powerhouse musician and one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, garnering plaudits for his role in helping to propel jazz full tilt into the future over the past twenty-five years. His music is fueled by deep respect and intimate knowledge of the jazz tradition. Carter always finds a way into what ever musical situation he finds himself in. “You have to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter says. “I think there’s tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences”. He has released 14 recordings with his various ensembles for Atlantic Records, Sony and UMG. Several feature his renowned Organ Trio and one includes the Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra by renowned composer, Roberto Sierra. 30 August 2019 marked his long-awaited debut on Blue Note Records with the release of James Carter Organ Trio: Live From Newport Jazz. James Carter is the winner of multiple downbeat awards; and in 2004 received one of America’s highest cultural awards: The Dr. Alaine Locke Award, given annually to individuals who have provided exemplary service and leadership in the promotion of African-American culture. 2024 sees the debut of James Carter’s latest project: Lookin’ at Lock: The Music of Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, featuring James Carter on Saxophones, Satish Robertson on trumpet, Gerard Gibbs on piano, Hilliard Greene on bass, and Kahlil Kwame Bell on drums.

The featured artist this spring is a powerful ensemble of young musicians producing music derivative of the African Diaspora, and modern influences including R&B, Funk, Afro Caribbean, Fusion, Blues, Pop and Jazz. Tyreek McDole, a 24-year-old Haitian-American vocalist from sunny Florida, shines brilliantly as his star rises in the bustling New York Scene. With a string of prestigious awards to his name, Tyreek stands out as a rising star in the music world. It was during the acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2018 Essentially Ellington National Competition that Tyreek made his vocal debut, leaving an indelible mark as he walked away with the prestigious Outstanding Vocalist Award, presented by none other than the iconic Wynton Marsalis.
